KARACHI: Merit means the quality of being worthy. This word is generally not given value in many sectors.
Ignoring merit is a common occurrence in many schools, colleges, offices, hospitals and other organisations. The disregard for merit is taking over professionalism, where uneducated or inept employees are hired for jobs through nepotism or backdoor entry. Educated people are roaming here and there for jobs while illiterate people are being given positions as high officials.
The younger generations have also become clever. They know that in their country, education does not amount to success; what matters is good relations with public officials who are seated in places of power. Using a source within highly ranked offices has become a way to get jobs and oftentimes, people who have fake degrees and are illiterate are selected. This phenomenon must be stemmed at its outset so that the issue does not divert the minds of our youngsters towards immoral behaviour.
